Elective Affinities: Japanese Baskets and Ceramics

After the gruesome election on Tuesday...

...wandering among contemporary Japanese bamboo baskets and ceramics felt like an intellectual palate cleanser (Galaxy, 2001 by Honda Shoryu above).

On the second floor at the Asian Art Museum, there is an exhibit of local collectors Paul and Kathy Bissinger's modern Japanese ceramics by various artists including Sakiyama Takayuki...

...and Hoshimo Kayoko.

In an adjoining room displaying Lloyd Cotson's collection of Japanese baskets, one interesting piece after another rotates in for display, including Tangent Concentric Circles, 1970-75, by Noguchi Ranposai...

...and a lunch box above that may be the most elegant lunchpail ever devised.

Imperial power has always been rotten to the core, and watching the current United States variation disintegrate will be interesting. (Ceramic above is by Takiguchi Kuzuo.)
